Have your TOMATO plants grown over a metre high, looking lush and green on the top layers but showing problems on some of the older lower stems closer to ground level?
.
If yes, you may be probably suffering EARLY BLIGHT
.
Early blight is a condition caused by a fungus which over-winters and spreads under certain conditions particularly in spring during unstable weather. Those conditions include wet, windy and humid conditions and are more prevalent after repeat heavy rainfalls and unfortunately we’ve had a lot of that recently
.
The necrotrophic pathogen destroys the host tissue and then feeds on the dead plant matter. As an asexual pathogen, it reproduces quickly in spring through non-motile spores (conidia) but as the environment gets wetter, the spores are spread by wind and water and ultimately penetrate through the plant tissue either through the plant stomata or weak and vulnerable points within the plant
.
If infected:
.
1) Don’t plant TOMATO plants too closely. If they are too close, prune stems and leaves that are touching each other and may be preventing sunlight and good airflow
.
2) Cut and destroy infected stems
.
3) The pathogen grows slowly so you really don’t know if spores have settled elsewhere in seemingly healthy tissue. Spray the whole plant with copper or sulphur or alternative biofungicides but if that’s too environmentally harsh for you, try potassium bicarbonate. The reality however is that in severe or accelerated infestations there may be a need to apply stronger chemical fungicides or dispose the plant
.
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES:
.
1) Don’t water overhead. Bend over, squat and water the base of the plant
.
2) Give them plenty of space to grow and expand. Don’t create dense tomato ‘jungles’
.
3) Crop rotation helps. Spores can remain dormant for years in soil
