In cold weather, one of two things can occur to eggplants:
.
A) Death
.
B) Shutdown of biological functions for self preservation and survival mode
.
If your EGGPLANT is lucky enough to reach outcome B) then harvest all immature eggplants, trim the plant back heavily and kill off any remaining pests still lingering around the plant like aphids
.
You’ll be grateful you did. A plant like the one in the photo has no benefit ‘pretending’ to be functioning like it normally would in warm weather. It is not interested in creating new blooms (and if it does, they will die), maturing its existing crop, growing new foliage or interested in vegetative reproduction anytime soon. The majority of its food (starch) and excess nutrients are stored away safely in its roots and in cold weather has no need to be absorbing water to photosynthesise and often this is witnessed in fruit that look inferior, small, discoloured, mushy, soft or effectively rotting on the plant
.
The upside is that you will be eating eggplants quicker than attempting to sow or grow seedlings again in spring. The roots are well established and you will see quick growth
.
Young eggplants seedlings are volatile in cold conditions and even with warm temperatures need a consistently long warm growing season to grow successfully to maturity. At least with a successfully overwintered eggplant, you will not need to worry about getting into the trouble of growing seedlings again ✅
