Winter is a difficult time for CHILLIES
.
Lower temperatures, shorter days and a weaker sun causes a chilli plant to slow down growth and metabolic functioning
.
Unlike true dormancy where total shutdown occurs, CHILLI plants do move into a semi-dormant stage if temperatures are not so low that could easily kill them
.
A CHILLI plant that attempts to hibernate will often show signs of drooping or wilted leaves. This is often interpreted as a dead plant but this is not always the case
.
If your CHILLI plants have drooping leaves but no chillies or chillies that have become soft, mushy or have shown signs of sugar breakdown and decay, trim the whole plant back to around 10-15 cm above ground and wait until spring and warmer weather
.
If however your plant looks dead with drooping leaves but the CHILLIES on them are green yet firm, start trimming all the leaves and stems that look dead but allow the stems with CHILLIES on them
.
Reduce the amount of work the plant needs to do and the energy it needs to do in winter and focus on ripening those green chillies as best you can even in a low weak winter sun. This is a trick we do when we don’t want to harvest and ripen them indoors. In no time, our green CHILLIES have turned red, with little breakdown of sugar allowing their taste and heat levels to remain relatively unscathed
.
This trick may not work in all winters. It can however work in mild winters and in places where the plants get some winter outdoor protection
.
