Gardening APHIDS - what is

APHIDS - what is your favourite and most effective way to control them?
.
Common and proven ways to treat aphids include botanical oils, neem oil, insecticidal soaps, diatomaceous earth, rotenone, petroleum oil, chilli sprays
.
In addition, the following measures assist but may not be as effective as the application of organic & non-organic sprays:
.
- populations of predatory insects like lacewings and ladybugs and planting the correct plants in your ecosystem to attract them
.
- controlling ants. Ants harbour and protect aphid colonies for their honeydew. They will often migrate them. Prevent ants from climbing plants/trees by applying horticultural glue barriers around the trunk of the plant or apply tree bands. Ants cause an even bigger problem - sooty mould fungus - a result of honeydew being eaten by ants and spread by aphids across the plant
.
- hose them off
.
Have you come up with your own secret home-made weapon against aphids?

ROCKET (aka ARUGULA)
.
A brilliant salad green and one of our favourites to grow. This one is growing in a shared pot with other herbs 😍
.
Two key factors about ROCKET - it loves moisture, frequent watering (AND) cool weather
.
It has great tolerance to frost and cold weather but it will tend to bolt in the heat and is often grown as an annual down here in our temperate climate
.
We’ve strategically planted it in an area that has part-shade so we can prolong its perpetual harvest as much as we can moving into the warmer months later this year
.
ROCKET is a delicious green to grow in Autumn and compliments all other facets of a salad bowl. Throw in that salad bowl homegrown radishes, lettuce, onions and beets and things are starting to look very scrumptious 😋
.
To get ROCKET off to a flying start, plant it in richly composted manure. We’ve used chicken manure and fish emulsion
.
For the more adventurous, why not try your hand at growing it in a hydroponic system. It’s grows quickly and superbly - again the love of water 💦

As OLIVE lovers, this is our dream garden sight 😍😍😍
.
We remember the day we planted these miniature trees and today they are roughly 3 years old and this is the start of hopefully some pretty serious olive harvests and production for years to come 😍😍😍
.
It’s a pity though we won’t be around to enjoy their harvests for the next 2000 years but oh well, there’ll be plenty of future generations who will enjoy them 😂

TOMMY TOE tomatoes grow superbly well in a Melbourne autumn
.
They are one of very few tomato varieties that can be planted late as a seedling in January (mid-summer) and not only will it grow but thrive till April (and beyond!) if conditions are favourable. They produce bucket loads so you won’t need to be rushing to a grocery store anytime fast
.
High humidity, warm weather or excessively moist conditions from March onwards can however make them volatile to a fungal outbreak but apart from that, they are a very hardy and well acclimatised variety that requires a severe bout of cold weather to die
.
It always pays to extend your summer tomato season by growing indeterminate varieties which exhibit excellent tolerance to mild/coolish weather
