The trees around the area are vastly deciduous at this time of year forcing the young, hungry and timid possums to seek food from the lush evergreen trees in backyard gardens. Once the deciduous trees start growing foliage again they happily depart and leave this tree alone

CITRUS GALL WASP

Growth lumps like this on citrus trees (predominantly on lemon trees) must be removed before the fully developed wasp drills exit holes and escapes from the gall in early spring

If these lumpy growths are left to remain on the tree, repeat infestations will continue and at higher numbers creating branches with severely damaged tissue
.
Once this irrecoverable damage occurs, any other branches that grow from that point onwards might be nutrient deprived, weak and unable to hold many fruit or form fruit that are strong and healthy
.
The 4 semi-hardwood branches that have grown out of this gall (see photo) have failed to bud at all
.
If you leave galls to remain on the tree, not only will the wasps come back in bigger numbers due to frenzied spring-time breeding but any subsequent growth after the gall point is likely to affect the health and vitality of that part of the branch

Therefore, gall wasp management is an all-year affair constantly looking out for galls to be cut off and burned. If you have a consistent pruning schedule to keep your tree small, compact and well-shaped regularly, you will find that pruning will also assist in destroying freshly laid eggs on softwood you previously were not aware were injected with eggs ✅
