Gardening Ouch, I have a

Ouch, I have a sore back
.
ZUCCHETTA (aka TROMBONCINO) are slow starters compared to some of their close curcubita pepo relatives
.
They are quite a flexible variety to grow once established. You can harvest them from a foot long right up to a metre long. They are very commonly left to grow out to be harvested as a winter squash although they are best harvested at a foot long for optimal flavour
.
Tromboncinos are high yielding producing for quite a few months in the right conditions and can be grown along the ground as a sprawling vine or trained up a support structure. We are growing one along the ground (photo) and 3 other plants vertically

No APRICOTS this year for our young developing tree, but there has been some good growth
.
These trees are capable of growing in alkaline soils. PH levels of between 8 and 8.5 is not uncommon. We used our very own veggie mix soil as the base planting mix for this tree and it has been thriving 😂
.
The soil will however turn more acidic over time with rainfall, application of fertilisers and the natural structure and decomposition of organic matter and minerals in the soil
.
How and when to prune an apricot tree is crucial to its fruiting success
.
During the first couple of years and BEFORE it starts fruiting, formative pruning is important to ‘shape’ the tree for years to come. During this time, pruning should concentrate on removing suckers and shaping the tree as a vase to improve air circulation, access to direct sunlight and to avoid messy overlapping branches that will in future cause problems on windy days with fruit rubbing against each other but also making the tree more vulnerable to disease
.
After shaping the tree in its first 2-3 years, heavy pruning must be avoided or you risk having a poor or no fruit set. The reason for this is because apricot flowers form on second-year or older branches so if you prune too heavily and indiscriminantly you could very easily compromise next seasons harvest
.
A careful understanding on the age of the wood that different deciduous trees form their fruit on plays a key outcome to determining what type of pruning is relevant for the tree in question
.
TIP:
.
Pruning of apricot trees should be avoided during the dormancy period in winter as the pruning wounds on the tree make it vulnerable to a number of diseases and fungal attacks including gummosis and canker. Pruning wounds should be treated with biodynamic tree paste due to the vulnerability of apricot trees attracting fungal spores

One of two mystery volunteer TOMATO plants growing under our chicken coop has been revealed
.
Ah so beautiful - yellow cherry tomato 😍😍😍 and the funny thing is we’ve never grown this particular cherry tomato before nor have the chickens ever eaten remnants of this tomato 🤔 hmmm most probably the seed was deposited by birds or one of many diverse wildlife that visit @thegeogarden
