A big winter LEBANESE EGGPLANT season is arriving 😍
.
We didn’t grow our eggplants in open sun this season and this significantly slowed their growth so we did not get any eggplants in summer 😟
.
The good news is that the plants are starting to swell with buds now and we are hoping for a good supply of eggplants over the cooler months like we did last year 😍
.
When the weather gets bitterly cold later in the year, we’ll blanket them with a nice thick layer of pea straw and they will get a bit of protection as a result of growing in a secluded wind protected corner with assistance of radiated heat from concrete and building

CARBON - The building block to life
.
During photosynthesis, all plants use the energy of the sun and carbon dioxide (carbon mixed with oxygen) to create a new chemical molecule called “carbohydrate”
.
Carbohydrate (aka sugar) is the chemical that fuels plant growth providing the energy and nourishment required for healthy plant growth
.
When a plant dies and decomposes, it releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere and the cycle repeats itself
.
We humans (animals and living trees) also release carbon dioxide when we exhale thanks in large to the high volume of carbohydrate foods we eat originating from plants directly or indirectly
.
Any organism (plant, plant matter or animal) that dies and decomposes is carbon-rich and should never be thrown away - dry leaves, straw, mulch, wood chips, paper, manure etc (known as brown compost) all act as a natural fertiliser providing correct amounts of carbon release in the soil, your compost heaps and the atmosphere creating a vibrant healthy ecosystem for your plants to grow in ✅
.
Carbon is not brought as a fertiliser yet it is the key chemical compound that traps heat to produce plant sugars
.
The only time excessive carbon is bad for the environment is fossil fuel burning and the release of gigantic quantities of trapped carbon from the earths crust and the ocean floor. For this reason carbon has gained notoriety for its effect on the greenhouse and the ozone layer, but humans are responsible for excess carbon into the atmosphere - not the normal evolutionary cycle of decomposition
.
Nature was designed to release manageable levels of carbon into the atmosphere through the natural process of respiration and decomposition
