Who’s ready for a big CUCUMBER season? 😍😍😍
.
GROWING TIP:
.
One of the best fertilisers for CUCUMBERS is H2O - yes you heard right, water! 💦 😂
.
Water makes up 95% of a cucumber and it is a significant factor to the health of a vigorous and rapidly growing vine along with the eventual formation of good quality, crisp and bitter-free cucumbers
.
During hot summer days, irrigation should be carried out daily else you run the risk of harvesting cucumbers that look grand on the outside but will disappoint on the inside - bitter, dry and lacking juicy flavour
.
1) Soil must never be dry or allowed to dry out even for a day or two. It needs to be soaking wet, well saturated or worse case - moist at all other times
.
2) On a hot dry day, never put off watering. Even one day of missed watering on a 40 degree day could affect the quality of the developing and maturing fruit. Consistency is important and keeping the soil hydrated at all times
.
3) Water early morning so that water can reach the root zone. Avoid watering in the middle of the day because water can easily evaporate. You can water late evening but morning is better as sunlight, water and CO2 absorption is at its most effectiveness
.
4) Water deeply instead of shallow surface sprinkling. Slow high volume watering penetrating the soil deeply is important
.
5) An inch of mulch like straw is ideal to keep soil moist throughout the hottest times of the day. If you have a drip irrigation system like we do make sure it’s under the 1 inch layer of mulch and not above it
.
CUCUMBERS are one of those summer crops that can never have enough water and that is why they are a favourite with hydroponic growers because they grow superbly well in hydroponic greenhouses producing high yields ✅
