.
They had the audacity to climb down from their safe haven and sanctuary on the trees and decided to make a daring move on our delicious young immature BEETROOT GREENS
.
Even though BEET GREENS can be harvested at any stage before the bulbous roots fully develop, care should be taken on how many leaves to cut. If you cut all of the tops off, the roots will still continue to grow but they may turn out malformed and poorly sized
.
Mindful of this fact, the POSSUMS left the inner smaller leaf stems to grow, so hopefully these seedlings make a recovery (probably not a full recovery) to form relatively decent sized beets
.
Note however that if you are growing these plants solely for their highly prized and nutritious leaf tops, then you can harvest them more often (that is before the possums do) 😍😍😍
.
These possums definitely don’t care about beetroot relish - they prefer the juicy young leaves. They loooooove fresh lush softwood so spring will present an even bigger challenge 😏

Should you fertilise DECIDUOUS fruit trees in autumn as they prepare for winter dormancy?
.
Generally no. This is for a number of reasons:
.
Firstly, they don’t make food in winter because photosynthesis ceases. As a result, mineral nutrients are not needed to be absorbed by the roots to drive growth or fuel energy because the metabolic functions of the tree slow down
.
When the tree releases a chemical called abscisic acid informing the leaves that it will no longer use the suns energy to produce food (sugars), it politely asks the leaves to fall off. Growth is halted, cells are no longer dividing and the tree cannot convert food into amino acids to aid in new protein development
.
Instead, it conserves food already stored within the tree and processes it slowly to be used only for essential survival functions during the dormancy period. Before the leaves are instructed to fall off, chlorophyll is stripped and the key nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium are moved through branches and stored in the bark to be recycled when spring arrives. Existing proteins in the tree are broken down and re-used during the dormancy period
