Gardening Do you prefer watering

Do you prefer watering in the morning or in the evening prior to sunset?
.
Watering in the early morning while it is still cool allows water to be absorbed into the soil and prevents water loss from evaporation or scorching. The water deposited through early morning watering keeps the soil moist enough as the sun and heat arrive. This is very important to prevent plant dehydration
.
Evening watering is also good at preventing evaporation and allows plant roots to absorb water for several hours. The downside is that plants may not dry out properly and this could promote classic fungal problems like powdery mildew and can trigger snails into action 😂
.
We’ve recently implemented a fantastic low-drip irrigation system from @holmangarden and we’ve set it up in a way where we try to avoid watering the vegetable leaves (or at least not much) so watering at night is also a very viable, exciting, safe and effective option for us

A big season of yummy LETTUCE production has commenced @thegeogarden 😋
.
This is our curly/crisp head variety
.
FERTILISER TIP:
.
Lettuce are shallow-rooted and need good watering. Mulch can assist depending on your region. Don’t allow the soil to dry out erratically, because lettuce are notorious for setting to seed or you may end up with LETTUCE tasting a fraction bland or on the bitter side
.
The secret to growing a crisp, good looking LETTUCE with great flavour is fast healthy growth. They do like to be well-fed but often a well composted soil provides an excellent source of slow-release nutrients with the occasional application of a plant tonic every few weeks
.
Application of NITROGEN based fertilisers at the seedling stage (once the roots have established themselves) can also be used but one word of caution:
.
NITROGEN BURN is common - a condition created by the excessive use of high amounts of nitrogen. The burn is caused by nitrogen salts more commonly known as concentrated levels of ammonia - a chemical very high in alkalinity
.
Although most store-brought fertilisers sell nitrified nitrogen (ammonia converted safely to nitrates and able to be used safely by veggies), applying an excess amount can still cause a problem especially if the use of urea (a highly concentrated and processed form of ammonia) is also used
.
More commonly however, nitrogen burn is caused by factors such as pets urinating repeatedly on the same spot and the use of fresh ‘hot’ manures like poultry, pig and horse. Their manure contain almost double the amounts of ammonia of other ‘cold’ manures like livestock. This is why chicken manure should never ever be used fresh from the coop on young seedling vegetables as the chances of nitrogen burn is real

Autumn EGGPLANTS starting to come good 😍
.
Thanks to @holmangarden, we have stopped hand-watering them. They now get watered by an automated Bluetooth tap timer that is scheduled to run every second day for 3 minutes. This newly installed system for us makes gardening a whole lot easier. Watering by hand has always been a major chore for us, but now we can sit back and enjoy the garden a bit more rather than constantly working on it 😂

Um, wrong season for self-seeded volunteer TOMATOES 🍅 to be growing 😂
.
Funny how there’s a swag of these tomato seedlings popping up everywhere around our chicken coop. Maybe we should leave them in there and see what happens. Who knows, we may invent s new cold-season heirloom variety 🤔 😂
