Gardening Do you have CUCUMBERS

Do you have CUCUMBERS that have over-ripened on the vine, become bitter, become too mushy, inedible or too seedy for your liking?
.
If so, consider using them as a pesticide control measure instead of feeding them to the chickens, composting them or throwing them away
.
Cucumber peels contain cucurbitacin which is a bitter substance that can be used for pest control and is used by the plant as a natural self-defence mechanism against hungry mouths
.
In addition, when the peels are incorporated with aluminium you can create a fantastic all-round pesticide regime to be used around the home
.
Placing cucumber peels in an aluminium tray/foil creates an even stronger chemical reaction that is unbearable to a number of creepy crawlers and can deter pests like slugs, grubs, snails, cockroaches etc
.
You can use this combination not only on your veggie patch but all around your property but one word of caution - aluminium is toxic to plants so if you are concerned about long-term metal toxicity, don’t place the aluminium anywhere where it could leach. Instead try and place the peels by themselves and see if that makes a difference

We have the odd concern about our OLIVE TREES
.
We have plucked a couple of branches here and there of mummified stems either died, dying or drying
.
We hope it may be a case of environmental stress or an unidentified borer at work, however we are realistic and fear it may be:
.
A) a strain of verticillium wilt affecting olive trees (very ominous symptoms)
.
B) canker stem disease (again precarious signs)
.
C) anthracnose. The symptoms are similar and do affect olive trees and although deadly, it is very rare in our part of the world but very possible
.
Most of the problems associated with growing OLIVE TREES down here include the olive lace bug and less severe fungal outbreaks like fungal spot and soft nose fungus, however none of these conditions are applicable here
.
We will be keeping a close eye. These dry branches are rare and the trees otherwise look lush, big, green and healthy but I suppose you can never be too careful and observant. A case of verticillium wilt could easily kill off the tree within 2-3 years 😟
