The most likely reason for this phenomenon in corn is watering and environmental
.
Cold temperatures (especially in the early stages of growth and development), cold soil, heavy dry crusty soil, hot conditions and lack of moisture will send a signal that it is a plant under stress
.
Although you cannot always control environmental factors, the biggest contributing factor to stunted corn plant growth is watering. A corn:
.
A) needs regular watering whilst it’s growing from seedling stage onwards
.
B) needs even more watering just before tassels start forming
.
C) needs even more watering after the tassels have formed right through to corn harvest day
.
CORN needs plenty of moisture especially in hot, non-humid areas and the soil should not be allowed to periodically dry out. Mulching the area around the corn is the best thing you could do and we didn’t do ourselves a service by not mulching this year. Last year our CORN was heavily mulched so water maintenance wasn’t that big of an issue for us

We’ve been busy this weekend planning our new irrigation system for our raised garden beds with these fantastic products from @holmangarden including automated tap timers, manifolds, poly pipes and a swag of associated accessories that we are in the process of setting up as a DIY project

We’ve always hand-watered our garden, and although we will still continue to hand water large sections of our garden such as our trees, we are confident these great irrigation items will make our year-round chore of watering veggies so much easier

Watering veggies just about everyday in summer takes a toll on you physically especially when you want to reclaim the weekends again 😂
