WHY DO LEAVES CHANGE COLOUR?
.
In autumn and winter, deciduous trees stop feeding. The sun is not as strong, the days are shorter and the temperatures drop
.
A hormone called abscisic acid signals the tree that it will not waste its time and energy on making chlorophyll because it will not draw enough energy from the sun to form carbohydrates in the form of starch or sugar
.
Instead it initiates a process known as dormancy - the slowing down of the metabolism and preventing cell division from occurring. This effectively grinds a halt to growth and places the tree in energy preservation mode until the weather warms up again
.
Prior to the leaves falling off, the existing chlorophyll on the leaves start breaking down and the leaves begin to expose molecular pigments that have been shielded by green chlorophyll during the entirety of the growing season. These pigments are called carotenoids
.
The colour of the leaf however can also depend on chemical changes that occur during this time as the tree prepares for dormancy. These pigments are known as anthocyanins and they often interact with chlorophyll residue to produce stunning colours
.
Weather also plays a key part to how vibrant or intense an autumn colour will appear on the tree 🍂
