Do these look like ordinary CITRUS tree branches?

Yes they are, however they are a special type of branch called water sprouts (or water shoots)
.
Water sprouts are young upright branches that grow straight up (reaching for the stars) and are often observed as fast growing branches above the canopy tree line. They are identified easily by their thorny structure and bigger leaves in comparison to the rest of the tree
.
They are often confused as suckers however a rootstock sucker grows below the graft line whereas a water sprout grows above the graft line
.
Although water sprout branches can ultimately bear fruit, they are not the most productive fruit-bearing branches and pruning them is often recommended
.
Pruning these branches exposes the canopy to sunlight and better air circulation. If you leave these branches to grow, the tree will eventually become huge making harvesting a challenge and making it near impossible to manage and treat one of the trees greatest nemesis - CITRUS GALL WASP
.
By allowing the branches to grow, you are in effect allowing the gall wasp colonies to thrive and grow bigger with every passing year because you are not pruning the tips of the branches where the gall wasp will reside and grow for the next 12 months...so with every year that passes without a prune, your tree will end up with so many gall wasp cavities that it will eventually need to be chopped down or pruned back to the main trunk to start all over again
.
The golden rule in growing CITRUS TREES is containment pruning and allowing the tree’s height to be within reaching distance by hand or worse case a small step ladder ✅
