TOMATO 🍅 plants have been booming in Melbourne's recent record-breaking November temperatures

The plants in the photo are shielded from all-day sun. They miss out on morning sun but we do want to give them some relief on those long summer days to avoid heavy respiration and reduce excess watering

The one thing we are concerned about is the prospect of a humid and wet summer. This creates a conducive environment for fungal attacks especially if the plants don't dry out adequately in the shaded spot

Ever seen CORN 🌽 grow suckers?

If not, then this is what it looks like. This one plant has an additional 3 stalks growing!

These extra stalks are called tillers. Unlike normal "suckers" that you see in a lot of other trees and plants, corn suckers don't seriously affect the main stalk and are generally not detrimental to the overall health and vigour of the plant
.
Quite to the contrary. The presence of these tillers indicates ideal growing conditions in terms of watering, sun and nutrients
.
Corn tillers (or suckers) are morphologically the same as the main stalk and in actual fact can form their own root system, ears, leaves and tassels
.
The only downside might be that the tillers will compete with the main stalk but if it means we can eat an extra cob or two that is great. The other thing that could happen here is that the tillers may shrivel and die if they are overpowered by the originating stalk. Let's wait and see what happens 😍

BEETROOT HARVESTING TIP:

To gain the maximum benefit and taste of a beetroot, they should be harvested no larger than 10 cm or 4 inches in diameter
.
We like to harvest them anywhere between the size of a 50 cent piece to approx 4 inches in diameter. There's nothing wrong with harvesting them bigger, but you may find them a bit tough and fibrous so the smaller they are the better ✅
