Gardening Um, ok so we

Um, ok so we weren't expecting CHERRIES πŸ’ this year
.
Firstly, our cherry tree was planted as a single trunked 'stick' last year with barely any roots
.
Secondly, the tree has 3 tiny scaffold branches the biggest of which is a meagre 15cm
.
This year the tree was all about trunk growth and the development of one or more leader branches
.
We would have preferred if it put its energy into growing its limbs but we have no complaints πŸ˜‚at least we get to have an early taste test πŸ˜‹πŸ˜Š

It's been a battle getting this WATERMELON seed up and running but with some warm weather recently and approaching mid-October, this beauty is now ready to face the real world
.
Last year, our WATERMELONS reached the size of tennis balls but a lack of direct sun and subsequent warmth was never going to succeed
.
We don't have the space, sun or location in the yard needed for a successful maturity of watermelons but in gardening if you fail first time, try again. It's all in the fun 😍😍😍

This is the only time of the year we dig around a sample garlic to investigate if the garlic should be at the growing point of expectation
.
We like what we see here. The bulb has started forming
.
Most GARLIC varieties start developing their bulbs as the daylight hours start getting bigger
.
Typically down here in Melbourne, the bulbs will start growing from around 1st October (daylight saving) till harvest time around 22nd December (summer solstice - the longest day of the year)
.
During this bulb growing period two things are critical:
.
- the gradual reduction of watering. Ease up on watering and don't water the garlic as regularly as what you did while the plants were growing
.
- fertilise with liquid solutions like seaweed to further strengthen the development of the bulb
.
