We are growing these delicious purple podded peas all around our avocado tree and believe it or not in a vertical herb garden bed as well 😂
.
We sowed them a few weeks ago in absolute freezing conditions and they are loving it. A real winter hardy variety. Even traditional cold season varieties like snow peas, sugar snap and the regular garden pea have often given us problems in extremely cold conditions during different phases of their growth but not this variety. We reckon it could even grow in snow ❄️ 😂
.
Because they are a dwarf variety they don’t really need to be staked so we are happy for them to grow as ground cover and dangle freely on the vertical herb garden bed

NITROGEN - a key nutrient for the healthy development of brassica
.
NITROGEN TRIVIA:
.
Even though earths atmosphere is made up of almost a staggering 80% nitrogen it remains inert and is therefore useless to plants
.
To be effective, nitrogen needs to be converted to a nitrate form to be effectively absorbed and used by plant roots - a process known as nitrogen fixation
.
Lightning strikes is one form of nitrogen fixation. At normal temperatures, nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere do not react with each other, however in the presence of high temperatures they do produce a chemical reaction
.
When a lightning strike occurs, strong heat is generated within the vicinity and the surrounding nitrogen and oxygen gases come together and react to produce nitric oxide. The nitric oxide continues to further react with more oxygen which in turn creates nitrogen dioxide
.
When nitrogen dioxide combines with rainwater after the lightning strike, you end up with nitric acid falling on earth and seeping through the soil combining with minerals to form nitrate - the form of nitrogen plants can absorb through their roots ✅
.
Nitrogen dioxide is important in the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen, but unfortunately like carbon dioxide excessive amounts are generated by humans through the burning of fossil fuels causing air pollution and smog notably through the combustion of car vehicles and processing plants
