This is our ASPARAGUS bed
.
As the fronds (ferns) die back in early winter, they should be cut back close to ground level because the foliage no longer generates energy, food and sugars and the crowns (roots) move into dormancy
.
July is a great month down here in Melbourne to perform any of the following tasks:
.
A) Move the crowns to different locations in the garden or space them out giving the roots space to breathe and grow
.
B) Remove weeds in the growing area and keep the area clear of soil obstacles
.
C) Review and closely examine the quality of your soil paying special attention to PH levels. These plants do better in slightly alkaline levels and do not react favourably to highly acidic soil
.
D) July is a great time to fertilise the bed with key nutrients phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. Phosphorus is crucial for ASPARAGUS success because the crowns are the engine room of this plant and they grow deep
.
Phosphorus strengthens and targets root development and one of the great natural sources of phosphorus is composted aged chicken manure or rock phosphates. The problem however with phosphorus is its solubility in soil. Its ability to dissolve in water and be absorbed is highly dependent on soil PH - phosphorus has low solubility at or above a PH level of 7
.
Nitrogen is not that critical at this time. It is more relevant later in spring/summer to enhance the growth of new fronds. It is not advised to fertilise while the spears are maturing - best to wait until after harvesting
.
E) Now is a great time to apply plenty of compost and a layer of fresh organic mulch (to retain moisture). ASPARAGUS loves soft, friable ***moist*** soil but hates waterlogged puddles - avoid heavy saturated soil or heavy clay
