Nothing beats spinach on a breakfast plate along with some tasty asparagus, mushroom and eggs from our chickens 😋

Not only is SPINACH a super food, but it is one of the most productive crops that can be grown in a home garden providing an endless supply of harvests
.
Spinach thrives in shady areas and can grow successfully with very little direct sunlight. It does not like the constant hot sun or exposure to strong hot dry winds hence the reason it is classified more as a cool season crop
.
GROWING TIP:
.
To prevent premature bolting of spinach plants and to keep them invigorated, avoid drying them out and provide them with regular feeds. Keep them moist by watering them deeply a couple of times per week. Optionally, you can apply some feeding mulch over the soil that will help to retain moisture and release nitrogen slowly ✅

After 10 days of sowing our spring seeds we have germination happening on our sweet corn, burgundy okra (photo), orange pumpkin and ronde de nice zucchini

The last week in Melbourne has recorded some of the coldest days this winter and we weren't expecting okra and sweet corn to come up this early as traditional heat lovers

GREENHOUSE TIP:

If you don't have the space for an outdoor greenhouse and do not want to grow seedlings inside the house, try buying a little or mini seedling tray with a lid on it and ventilation flaps
.
Place these trays on top of concrete in a nice open sunny position. Concrete is an excellent material to maintain thermal mass which is exactly what you want when sowing seeds in cold outdoor weather especially with fluctuating day and night temperatures
.
During the day, concrete stores energy absorbed from the suns rays and re-radiates the heat slowly over the night
.
Last year we grew all our seedlings in a strong sunny position directly on outdoor concrete, but this year we put them on an empty garden bed sitting on concrete instead
