GARLIC PLANTING TIPS:

Timing is critical. The more time a garlic plant has to vegetatively grow during the cooler months, the bigger the bulbs will get when the longer and warmer days arrive

Soil should be a clay or sandy loam base containing lots of organic matter and aged compost
.
Compost/manure is very important because A) it helps retain nutrients from leaching in friable sandy soils and B) provides excellent trace elements to ensure the plants grow upright, firm and green. Fertile soil = less reliance on heavy fertilising during the cooler months ✅
.
Soil PH should favour slightly alkaline but excess amounts of alkalinity in the soil can cause problems notably Zinc deficiency and can stunt the plant
.
Soil must not be waterlogged, heavily compacted, poorly percolated or sitting in a very saturated root zone. If you are concerned about drainage, hilling your plants is a very effective alternative ✅
.
At or before planting, apply phosphorous and potassium and apply nitrogen periodically after the leaves have emerged. Stop applying nitrogen as soon as the days get hotter and longer else you risk creating a lush looking garlic plant with side shoots, soft bulbs or bulbs that will not store well
.
TIP: after bulbs have started forming, a round of POTASSIUM fertiliser will further strengthen the bulb. Potassium helps regulate water and nutrient distribution into the bulb and activates enzymes for growth and synthesis

Plant the cloves preferably in a northerly direction allowing as much sun as possible to be able to work effectively with nitrogen intake throughout the growing season
.
Plant garlic away from weeds or areas prone to heavy weeding and space them out adequately and allow for extra depth if planting them in containers
