We’ve planted GARLIC cloves in two seperate locations including a heavily shaded location and an open sun location

We’ve also planted these cloves a month later than what we did last year. We like experimenting, because at the end of the day a lot of the secrets learnt in the garden don’t come from books but rather from trial and error experimentation. Science is after all the result of experimentation 😍

We will demonstrate the effects and differences of growing garlic in a shaded location compared to a sunny location

SILVERBEET - one of the great cool season crop performers

Nothing seems to bother this humble yet tasty, healthy and reliable backyard green
.
We consider it a better cool season performer than kale whose major criticism is slow growth from a seed/seedling stage, prone to attacks from caterpillars and of course the big one - attracting huge aphid colonies (both curly, straight and loose-leaf varieties)
.
Apart from an occasional pot hole on our leaves as a result of snails/slugs, a large and mature silverbeet plant is virtually indestructible and largely pest free (unless of course unexpected cutworms arrive that will destroy any living plant within their proximity)
.
So when friends and family think and ponder what to plant in the colder months 🤔, our answer is simple - SILVERBEET and it can be grown anywhere including shade 😍

MANDARIN VS TANGERINE

The terms mandarin and tangerine are sometimes used to describe what seems to be unrelated fruit when in actual fact they are very related

You see, a tangerine is a type/variety/cultivar of a hybridised mandarin orange and not vice versa - a mandarin is not a tangerine
.
A tangerine is more reddish-orange than the lighter coloured mandarin varieties, tougher skinned, slightly less sweet and more tart but can store better and longer
.
The confusion sometimes eminates from the fact that it is often called by its common name “tangerine” when in fact is biologically a type of mandarin orange
.
Because of a tangerine’s slightly physical differences it is often referred to by its culvitar name in a lot of places around the world often confusing people and giving the impression it is a wholly totally unrelated fruit within its own right
