*** LATEST NEWS
*** SUPER STORM ALERT
.
For our international readers, MELBOURNE and surrounding areas will be hit by a super storm for the next 3 days. Three months worth of summer rain will be dumped in only the next 3 days! It has already starting raining but according to the magnitude and severity of the downpour, this is only the calm before the storm!
.
The bureau is describing it as 'catastrophic'. 5000 emergency volunteer workers are on standby. There will be severe flooding and damage along with crop and garden damage. Fingers crossed for everyone out there especially our rural friends bracing themselves for a rare phenomenon

Our young APPLES 🍎 are coming through
.
The production of our apple tree this year is poor. Last year we had a super heavy crop, but this year has been very quiet 😪
.
TWO KEY REASONS FOR THIS:
.
REASON A:
.
Apple trees are one of the fussiest to grow if they don't have a minimum amount of chill hours during their dormancy stage
.
Chill hours means that a dormant deciduous fruit tree requires a minimum period of sustained cold weather at a particular temperature to be able to successfully produce fruit to its capacity
.
This process is called vernalization and a mild winter can slow growth, delay blooming and even prevent blooms from forming
.
REASON B:
.
Because we had an incredible harvest last year (first year harvest), the tree has switched to biennial mode because of the effects a super heavy crop in one year has on the following year
.
Biennial fruiting in fruit trees is very common and is more prevalent in trees that produce a record harvest in one year and a quiet (and sometimes) no harvest the following year
.
Don't be alarmed if your tree produces a super harvest one year and a much quieter one the following year. This is a natural biological cycle of a tree and its reaction to climatic and environmental changes ✅
.
One way to prevent your tree from turning biennial is to thin your heavy crop in the year of a heavy crop-bearing season. We however don't thin fruit because we'd rather eat it than throw away 😂
