Gardening ORANGES basking in a

ORANGES basking in a cool wet autumn day 😍
.
The next best thing to harvesting fruit is actually watching them dangling off the branches. It makes gardening ever so more addictive 😍

One of our very few CAULIFLOWER seedlings that have not been eating by possums!
.
Last year we grew an unblanched variety out in the open sun but some of the heads got affected by the prolonged exposure to sun and formed the infamous purple tint which is caused by a harmless naturally occurring pigment called anthocyanin
.
This year, we are experimenting a bit and growing the exact same variety but in a much more shaded and protected zone. Hoping the effects of the sun will keep all of the heads white but it will be interesting to see what happens and just how big the heads will grow in the shade. Experimenting is one of our great joys in gardening 😍

LIMES - one of the great super fruits
.
Slicing up a lime and placing a couple of slices in your daily drinking water bottle promotes a strong healthy body by boosting your immune system and encouraging healthy cell development
.
LIMES are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals including potassium for healthy blood pressure levels
.
LIMES however are of more interest to the scientific and medical fraternity as a source for bioflavonoids and bacteria fighting capabilities
.
The LIME peel in particular contains a range of phytochemicals, glycosides and antioxidants all identified as potential in preventing cancer, stopping the progression of certain cancer cells and destroying cancer cells in particular cases

SLUGS & SNAILS on the attack! Our poor MINT ☹️
.
We don’t have an electric fence around our garden beds so the next best thing (without killing them) is to apply a copper fence line to ensure snails and slugs 🐌 do a “U” turn
.
The scientific verdict is still out if copper tape truly reacts with the mucus of slug slime to create a mild electrical charge that disrupts the nervous system of the creature or whether copper is just simply toxic to slugs when reacted with their slime
.
In either case, to be effective, the copper tape needs to be big enough to allow the slug the time to interact with it and cause a reaction
.
The tape must keep its shine. If the tape becomes too damaged and weathered, apply some vinegar to re-shine it or apply a new tape
.
What is your experience with copper tape? We find it does seem to help but is by no means 100% fault-proof nor does it deter all types of slugs and snails
.
For the more copper-driven enthusiasts out there, BORDEAUX MIX which is a combination of hydrated lime and copper sulphate not only is used to great effectiveness to kill ungerminated fungal spores of downy and powdery mildew but can also be used to spray plants to deter slugs
.
The mixture allows it to bond to the plants for a long time providing a good level deterrence to slugs/snails
.
Any COPPER based mix however should be used very carefully. Excessive or indiscriminate use of COPPER will in the long-term do more damage than good to your environment and delicate ecosystem
.
Incorrect levels of COPPER is toxic and can quickly become a pollutant to your plants, soil and worms
.
Excess levels of COPPER in your garden is hard to neutralise and is not very soluble and can therefore remain in your environment for a very long time (years)
