Our garden theme for this Autumn is lots of greens that can be cut, harvested and eaten fresh daily
.
Eating plenty of nutritious greens over the colder months helps strengthen the immune system and keeps us strong 💪

Fresh autumn volunteer tomatoes but unfortunately we will need to pull this plant out shortly. The plant has cluttered and dirtied a nice succulent garden bed around the coop but we also need to perform some renovations to the chicken coop and the volunteer is holding us back!
.
However, you’ve got to love volunteer plants, but they don’t always seem to surface at the right parts of the garden! 😂

GIANT FORDHOOK SILVERBEET
.
The sad part with this SILVERBEET is that the chickens won’t have the patience to wait until it grows to giant proportions. However, mind you, it’s not all for the chickens 😂

Has your DECIDUOUS tree failed to set fruit or produced only 1 fruit?
.
CHILL hours is the amount of cooler temperatures a tree must undergo to be able to successfully break out of its dormancy. Different tree varieties fall into 2 main categories of low-chill or high-chill. The definition of “chill hours” is an estimate based on models adopted on scientific research for professional agricultural use and can range from 0 degrees Celsius to 7 degrees Celsius or higher
.
For anyone planning on growing a deciduous fruit tree, the first question to answer is if your climate will offer enough cold winter hours for vernalisation to occur
.
Local advise and knowledge is very useful else you may end up with a deciduous tree grown in a wrong climatic region for the purposes of optimal fruit production
.
If you plant a low-chill variety in a high-chill area, you run the risk of it breaking dormancy prematurely on an unexpected warm day and risk permanently damaging the buds and leaves for the upcoming season
.
Likewise, if you plant a high-chill variety in a low-chill region the tree may have delays in blooming or may not come out of dormancy and fail to bloom at all!
.
A biological delay in blooming can have ramifications on the quantity and quality of fruit set. The other problem a delay in blooming causes is a more serious one for those trees requiring cross-pollination at the same time or monoecious flowers whose timing on pollination must occur at a particular time. The risk of ending up with no fruit for the season in question is very real
