.
It’s a super versatile winter green and although it’s often known as a type of Chinese cabbage don’t be tricked by the word “cabbage’
.
You see BOK CHOY leaves can be cut and harvested about an inch or so above the base of the plant and the stems will re-grow offering an ongoing perpetual harvest
.
BOK CHOY does not have a head as you would expect with a cabbage variety but the leaves can be cut and harvested just as you can do with silverbeet throughout the colder months of the year

What’s your ugliest sight in winter?
.
Ours would undoubtedly have to be our ASPARAGUS fronds in their usual winter die-back cycle. Not the prettiest of winter sights! π
.
Once the fronds turn yellow typically around late autumn or early winter, they need to be cut close to ground level because they no longer provide energy and food to be stored or processed by the roots. Once cut, the soil will be topped up with compost and mulch in preparation for fresh spring growth
.
We do not expect spears this coming spring or at least of harvestable quality but realistically we should start getting them from spring 2019 onwards
