Gardening Approaching spring time, so

Approaching spring time, so we need to start clearing out the remaining MANDARINS still on the tree, in preparation for hundreds of new aromatic springtime flowers 😍😍😍

Haha LAVENDER looks a bit barren but it’s only a few weeks away from swelling into action for spring. Hopefully!
.
We haven’t been consistently pruning them over the last couple of years and this has caused the shrub to develop woody hardwood stems 😧
.
For this reason, we had to take a bit of a risk and give it a hard prune right down to the woody growth section 😳
.
Typically, you shouldn’t prune LAVENDER plants that low (or more like don’t allow their hardwood stems (older than 1 year) to grow too large/tall unchecked
.
The skill behind LAVENDER pruning is not to stop the woody growth but rather delay the inevitable as much as possible
.
As these plants age, they will naturally get woodier, but the idea is that after the end of every flowering season, they be pruned back a couple or so centimetres above the junction where hardwood (> 1 year old) meets semi-hardwood (last 12 months growth) in the aim of rejuvenating a flush new growth in the coming spring
.
By pruning at that level, there is only a very small amount of new wood growth visible so the plant still looks healthy and you are not exposing its age very noticeably! πŸ˜‚
.
Fingers crossed ours will recover due to our complacency but we can see lots of light green tissue on the incision points🀞
.
Do you have a favourite way of pruning LAVENDER?
