What’s your favourite way to save seeds?
.
Ours is a simple approach but very effective and never disappoints. We don’t prepare them in any special way before sowing them
.
We simply wash off and dry the seeds directly onto paper and straight into a dark cupboard. With some seeds like tomatoes, the seed sticks to the paper with some slime residue and when the time comes to plant, we cut the paper into little sections or plant the whole sheet in and then later thin out the seedlings. We don’t remove the seeds from the paper
.
The paper then decomposes and adds a bit of carbon back into the soil and not the atmosphere
.
TIP
.
Paper is good for the garden and is often used as a form of mulch and a popular addition to the brown component (carbon) of compost heaps but care needs to be taken on the type of paper you use for different purposes
.
Certain types of paper have been manufactured or treated with toxic levels of metals and additives and chlorine
.
Regarding ink, some paper contain environmentally-unfriendly dyes and inks that are not created from natural plant derivatives but rather petro-chemical and artificial additives that also help prolong the longevity of the paper
