Gardening We seriously need to

We seriously need to cut back on BUSH BEAN plants. We can't keep up with the harvests. We would require bean dinners every second day to keep up at this rate 😂

The young larvae of the infamous CODLING MOTH
.
This beauty was caught red-handed wandering around on our apple tree
.
The mother moth typically lays eggs from late August (Melbourne) right through the warmer months. A tree like our apple tree could be affected by up to 3 generations of egg-laying
.
Upon hatching, the larvae may initially feed on the apple leaves but quickly chew their way into the fruit where they can feed for up to roughly 5 weeks
.
The indistinguishable damage on the fruit is clearly visible. Big brown spots filled with larvae poo and a tiny hole. Who hasn't seen these pot marks in pesticide-free organic apples?
.
Once they have filled their tummy, they leave the fruit in search of a secluded area to spin a cocoon typically in a curled up leaf but it's not unusual to find them set home in flakey bark, crevices and other protected areas including debris around the bottom of the apple tree. The pupal process in cold weather can take longer and they often overwinter and come out in early spring as an adult moth to start a new cycle of breeding
.
Depending at what stage of eradication you seek to achieve with the CODLING MOTH problem on your apple, pear and quince trees, there are a number of control mechanisms ranging from low toxic chemical solutions, biological controls, physical barriers, traps to good hygiene practices around your trees
