.
This variety is mildly sweet, crisp and can be used anywhere from traditional stir-fries to soups, eaten raw or in salads
.
The green tops can be eaten and their flavour is delicious similar to mustard greens or spinach although outer leaves should be cut and eaten when they are small at around 15 cm or alternatively thin out spare seedlings to enjoy a longer perpetual harvest of scrumptious green tops 😋
.
The seeds are sowed easily and the plant has superb tolerance to freezing weather and a strong resistance to bolting. We sowed ours in the depths of winter and they have grown well with utter neglect
.
As a cool season crop, TURNIPS should be sowed from late summer onwards at least in temperate climates because heat can often cause the taproot to become somewhat woody and lose its vigor
.
You can leave the TURNIPS in the ground and they can grow to 6 inches in diameter but we prefer harvesting them at this size for their nice sweet flavour
.
TURNIP TRIVIA:
.
In some parts of the world, the white vegetables are called TURNIPS while the larger yellow varieties are known as SWEDES (for Swedish turnip) or RUTABAGAS and often used in livestock feed plus human consumption
.
Yet to add confusion, in other parts of the world the yellow version is known as TURNIP (or neep) and the white version known as SWEDE. Try figure out!

Most PEA varieties are considered a cool season crop, but here in Melbourne spring blossoms often work well too
.
In fact, we find that PEA varieties sowed in autumn sometimes don’t perform as well in our garden compared to sowing seeds in late winter
.
Even though we find sowing PEA seeds so late in winter helps their early growth moving into spring they can easily succumb to heat and warm weather as we move deeper into spring

Ok, get out. It’s my turn now
.
These chickens sure need a few manners. The other day there were 3 chickens sitting in this exact same nesting box! and there were 5 other nesting boxes available at the time 😂
