Gardening Volunteer garden MUSHROOMS growing

Volunteer garden MUSHROOMS growing on the root zone of our olive trees 🍄
.
What a great sight
.
MUSHROOMS = fertile and nutritious soil ✅
.
FUN FACTS:
.
- Mushrooms derive from a fungus
.
- The mushroom is the reproductive organ of the fungi
.
. - The non-reproductive component of the fungi is called mycelium (analogy = plant roots)
.
- Mushrooms do not photosynthesise. Instead, the mycelium supplies nutrients and water from the soil to the fungus through a series of chemical reactions (OR) they get their energy via an exchange of sugar for ions from the roots of trees if they are in a symbiotic relationship (mycorrhiza) with that tree or plant

TRUE SURVIVORS - our overwintered PEPPERS 🌶 not only endured and survived our winter, but they also had to overcome a bout of pith and tissue necrosis, aphid infestation, physiological conditions (notably) leaf roll and chilling injury as evidenced through calcium deficiency symptoms
.
CALCIUM is crucial to the formation and division of plant cells and cold weather often inhibits the mobility and solubility of this mineral in the soil (lower transpiration rates in winter) often affecting the redistribution of cellular calcium within the plant
.
This is why it is common practice to prune back these plants in cool temperate weather, so as to preserve and somewhat force the plant into a semi-dormancy stage to prevent the plant from suffering severe chilling injury which can cause disease, tissue and cell membrane damage causing a lethargic and stunted looking winter plant
.
But these plants are enjoying the conditions at the moment loaded with young peppers and developing buds
.
This is one of the great discussion points of any gardener - overwintering a known summer variety and then not knowing if it will:
.
A) Survive winter
.
B) If it survives winter, will the vigor, vitality, quantity and quality of the crop still be as good as if it was grown as an annual in a temperate climate as a result of the long- term effects of chilling injury?
.
Overwintering in a temperate climate is very much a personal preference with many gardeners offering varying levels of mixed success, however under the right micro-climate environment one sets up in their own garden, overwintering may yet just surprise even the most skeptical of gardeners ✅

Who loves growing GREEK OREGANO for drying?
.
We are fortunately OREGANO addicts 😂
.
GREEK OREGANO however grows best in hot, dry or arid regions with little care, watering, fertilising and overall maintenance
.
The batch of seedlings you see in the photo are slightly late (for our short and unpredictable summer) so we’ll need to wait and see if we get large enough plants for drying. We do however have an earlier batch that is growing very well 😍
.
OREGANO is notorious for hybridisation through cross-pollination and for creating plants that are not considered ‘true’ oregano (Origanum vulgare) species but very similar. This has sometimes caused confusion amongst gardeners
.
True oregano belongs to the Origanum genus of the mint family and includes common garden varieties like Greek oregano, ornamental oregano and commonly sold “marjoram” varieties
.
There are also many other types of plants labelled as “oregano” but of which do not belong to the same genus family. Examples include “oregano” from a number of Latin American countries like Spanish thyme and bush oregano 🌿
.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. You get to choose which “oregano” complies with your taste buds ✅
