This is what is known as a BREBA FIG
.
A breba is a fig that develops in early spring on previous years growth however breba figs (which have been sitting dormant over the winter period) aren’t the main crop of this tree
.
The majority of the figs that will develop on this tree will be on current season’s spring growth and will ripen in late summer/autumn
.
These early season breba figs vary from one variety to another. Some fig varieties produce a heavy breba crop, whilst other varieties produce few breba yet others produce none
.
Some breba figs are not as tasty or shaped like the normal late season crop and sometimes growers remove these figs to stimulate new season growth
.
Depending on the climatic region that you are growing fig trees in, breba figs could be your one and only point of harvest, so it’s always a very nice luxury to have knowing figs can form at the start and end of the season ✅
.
Our tree won’t be producing much this year because it is still very young and unfortunately last year a major scaffold branch was snapped off (possums are the prime suspects) and therefore the tree will be focusing on growing back again this year but if we get a few more figs along the way - bonus 😋😋😋
