Gardening Keep an eye out

Keep an eye out on your CUCUMBERS 🥒 this summer because measuring at 10cm long, mini-cucumbers can easily become lost in a dense vine 😮
.
Thankfully, we spotted this one quite easily and the verdict? Well, it was juicy and crisp - the perfect bitter-free taste 😋
.
Growing cucumbers isn’t always about size it is sometimes about practicality
.
A mini-size variety is great value. Snack size and it can be taken and eaten anywhere. Use what you need without cutting a large cucumber ✅

Beautiful APOLLO globe tomatoes 🍅 Some have started ripening (not in the photo) so we are on track to eat our first red globe tomato before Xmas day 😍
.
This variety is a great all-round salad variety. It is an indeterminate variety that will serve us well over the summer months and into early autumn

You are often told not to use fresh chicken manure on your garden patch but why?
.
ANSWER: AMMONIA
.
In humans, ammonia is a metabolic waste product as a result of the decomposition of amino acids. The liver then combines ammonia with carbon dioxide to create a milder, less toxic form of ammonia called urea which dissolves in water and exits the body as urine - human urine is itself an excellent (less harmful) source of liquid nitrogen for plants
.
Chickens however do not urinate and therefore ammonia does not become urea - instead it is converted to uric acid excreted as a white looking solid paste or powder in the manure
.
As a result of ammonia compounds in the manure, it raises the PH of the manure to alkaline and a high ammonia content in any solvent can harm plants and in particular young seedlings. Ammonia can burn young and herbaceous roots, stunt the growth of the plant and worse of all can dry up the soil in the worse of cases
.
Composting and aging manure means allowing microbes to further decompose the ammonia into ammonium (usually through interaction with nitric acid) to create nitrate salts which will lower the PH and allow plants to uptake nitrogen in a more safe and effective way
.
Fresh chicken manure can be considered on large mature trees but even there with great care and caution. Microbes must be given an opportunity to carry out the oxidation of ammonia into nitrite and nitrate salts

Beautiful fuzzy young QUINCE fruit forming 😍😍😍
.
DID YOU KNOW?
.
Possums and QUINCE are inseparable? It is one of their favourite (if not the favourite) of all fruit trees
.
Once a possum sniffs out a QUINCE tree in your garden, BEWARE - start getting the net out or you may wake up to a horrific scene 😞
.
The good news with QUINCE trees however is that large established trees fruit in their hundreds so you will probably still manage a respectable harvest by season’s end however they will not leave your tree alone and will repeatedly attack it often within a few days of every attack and to make matters worse one possum will bring the rest of its family for a feeding frenzy. They don’t often clean out the whole fruit - they like to take sizeable bites from different fruit on the same night! 😏
