Gardening Just a couple or

Just a couple or so TOMATOES a day will do just fine for the customary grilled tomato in the morning’s big breakfast and some for the dinner salad bowl πŸ˜‹

ZUCCHINI TIP:
.
This season we have been hit by an excessively high incidence of powdery mildew. We always get affected however never to the extent we have seen this year. Some of our leaves are totally snow white - scary stuff
.
Best course of action is to remove badly affected leaves (AND) leaves that are growing horizontally or have collapsed to a horizontal position - this simply creates a conducive environment for water and moisture to sit between and around the plants
.
Sometimes a hard prune back to ground level is required to destroy affected sections of the plant
.
After the prune you will need to spray either chemical or bio-organic fungicides to manage the problem and possible re-occurrence
.
Common treatments include bicarbonates (potassium preferred over sodium), metal-based sprays (predominantly copper and sulphur), diluted milk, plant essential oils, vegetable or alternative animal or mineral oils
.
Of course for any of these possible treatments, the first question to be asked is which treatments are best for prevention, total cure or to simply control an incurable situation?
.
Irrespective if treatments are off the shelf, homemade or experimental - they all require great discretion and understanding on their impact on:
.
- the plant itself (more harm than good)
.
- soil contamination
.
- toxicity and harm to soil organisms (microbes and earthworms)
.
- Its effect on the soils PH level both short term and long term
.
- how long the remnants of the substance remains in the soil and how this affects the biological and chemical structure of the soil
.
Great care is always needed when determining how many times to spray, dosage rates and dilution rates especially for improvised home made solutions

it’s very hard to take photos of plump red STRAWBERRIES for the simple reason that they do not remain on the plant long enough for a photo to be taken but here’s one πŸ˜‚
