Injury from chilling conditions varies depending on the variety of pepper or chilli

Some varieties handle the cooler conditions better than others however the plants are still sensitive to cold temperatures and require warmer weather for normal metabolic functioning

When the temperatures drop low, they tend to move into a semi-dormant phase because they cannot generate enough food to be able to convert into energy and to fuel their key cellular processes
.
The prevention of such normal metabolic functioning weakens the plant tissues because chemical and physiological changes occur to the plant. The production of protein, carbohydrates and lipids all are disrupted
.
In severe cases, frost/freeze injury is more fatal when temperatures drop around 0 degrees and below. Ice crystals form within plant tissues that cause a disruption to the membranes and dehydrate cells
.
Wooded sections usually develop at the growing tips of stems and can quickly spread. The best course of action is to prune the deadwood and hope that there is a bit of green pigment left to rejuvenate the plant in warmer weather. Either that or the plant will unfortunately die 😔

The black container you see in the photo contained dry stale soil (more like recycled dirt) for over a year and nothing was growing in it apart from sections of moss and some weeds that we pulled out

We were going to tip it over this spring and freshen it up with composted potting mix until this happened in the last few weeks....

Self seeded PARSLEY. You’ve got to love PARSLEY. It can grow in even the most inhospitable soil conditions

From memory, we did once upon a time grow PARSLEY in one of these tubs but that was many many months ago and we are not even convinced that we even let it go to seed back then 🤔

Parsley seed is notoriously slow to germinate and can sometimes remain dormant in the soil indefinitely due to prolonged environmental, chemical or biological factors but this is a welcome surprise moving into spring 😍
