A very effective way to hand-pollinate ZUCCHINI plants this summer is to locate a male flower early to mid morning that is fully open and cut it off
.
Remove all the petals carefully minimising disturbance to the pollen grains attached to the stamen
.
Next, locate a female flower that is fully open again early to mid morning. Rub the anther against the female stigma gently and uniformly. You can apply the same male flower against multiple female flowers and only cut off another fresh male flower if you feel you’ve exhausted the pollen count
.
Job done. Off to work, a cup of coffee or even back to sleep 😴
.
TIP: Make sure to pollinate early morning when male and female flowers are fully open (not fading or wilted) and looking vibrant as ever. The reason for this is because fkowers are at their freshest and most receptive in the early morning
.
Pollen in the morning will be far more effective than extracting it from male flowers later in the day. The longer you leave pollen out in the open the quicker it will deteriorate
.
Female ZUCCHINI flowers are only open for 24 hours at best but often close off much earlier in the day. Therefore the earlier you pollinate, the stronger your chances of a successfully fertilised ZUCCHINI ✅

Hmmm APRICOTS 😋
.
The only enemies with this tree currently are:
.
1) Strong wind - at the moment our vase shape leader branches are not strong and established enough to withstand the elements with their young fruit. The tree needs sturdier growth and further development in its scaffold and lateral branch structures to withstand wind damage. We’ll be focusing on this aspect of pruning after fruit harvest
.
2) Possums - it won’t take much of a climbing effort or a jumping effort to snap off a branch
.
3) Birds 🦅
.
4) Heavy fruit will weigh down the weak branches making them prone to snapping
.
5) A lack of fruit thinning will potentially create smaller fruit on this tree but this is not an issue for us. For home gardeners like ourselves every fruit matters no-matter size or quality 😍
.
6) Prowling uninvited fingers. Probably the biggest threat! 😂
