Gardening Growing DWARF PURPLE SHIRAS

Growing DWARF PURPLE SHIRAS PEAS on a vertical herb garden bed. So funny 😂
.
These PEAS are grown more in autumn/winter, but we are hopeful the weather can hold up and allow them to produce lots of dangling purple-podded peas 😍😍😍

What’s your initial reaction when you open up the pantry to grab some POTATOES for dinner and you see this?
.
ANSWER: Utter jubilation 👏👏👏 more fun time in the garden
.
To prolong the shelf life of potatoes 🥔 they are best stored in a cool and dark place and although it is dark in our pantry it may just be a little too warm for this batch of potatoes 😂
.
Warm conditions will cause sprouting and if they were left in an area with light as well, the chitting process would only be accelerated
.
It’s not a good idea to eat sprouted potatoes. A sprouted POTATO that has been exposed to light undergoes physiological changes including the production of chlorophyll as it attempts to ‘grow out of the soil’ and feed for itself
.
The green colour on sprouted potatoes however is usually accompanied by solanine - a substance that can make you really sick if consumed in high dosage. Solanine usually forms under the skin and around the eyes and shoots of a sprouted potato
.
You could potentially cut off early shoots or potato skin that is turning green but the potato may not taste at its ultimate best so it’s off to the garden for replanting 😍😍😍

With hundreds of new spring blooms scheduled to arrive shortly, we may need to start staking some of the weaker sprawling branches
.
It’s going to be a real log jam between the existing ripening summer fruit, the developing autumn/winter fruit and the plethora of new spring buds that will burst into the scene shortly 😂

CELERY is growing back well after we harvested everything back to ground level a few weeks ago
.
The only challenge now is getting a big second harvest before warmer conditions sets off bolting
.
CELERY TIP:
.
To reduce the effects of a potentially bitter harvest, CELERY needs the right growing conditions - cool weather, lots and lots of watering and a rich moisture-retaining soil. Heat and dry soil are no friends of CELERY
.
Watering cannot be stressed enough. CELERY is made up of 95% water, and an interruption of water flow through the pipes of the stalk that are used to conduct water and nutrients will cause tough, stringy and even hollow stalks. You really want stalks to taste pleasantly sweet
.
A warmer sun is another reason for bitterness. As the temperature rises and the sun gets warmer, the plant becomes stressed and as part of its defence mechanism is to release elevated levels of a chemical called apiin - a bitter glycoside to act as a strong UV filter to absorb the radiation and to protect against the harsh sun
.
Because of this outcome, gardeners often deploy a number of different blanching methods in the days or weeks leading to a harvest to reduce the photosynthetic impact on the stalk itself and reduce the need of this natural flavonoid to affect the taste
.
However, you don’t always need to blanch depending on the time of year and if you are growing them for the stalk. Some varieties are self blanching whilst other varieties are not that susceptible to sunlight damage
