.
Although cross-contamination of seeds is more commonly seen by home gardeners saving seed from last years harvests (and incorrectly thinking they have a true to seed variety), it is also possible to cross-pollinate zucchinis in the current growing season like in this instance
.
The plant that the lebanese zucchini (left of the photo) belongs to is not a saved seed from last year. It’s a true to seed attained from a commercial seed producer but having said that cross-contamination can still occur inadvertently through wind and air
.
In this case, our lebanese and ronde de nice zucchinis are planted literally 3-3.5 metres apart and therefore since cross-contamination occurs between varieties and/or the same species, no zucchini seed saving will be performed here @thegeogarden ✅

TIP OF THE DAY:
.
How to avoid severely curly/crooked CUCUMBERS?
.
A) train them vertically with plenty of space to grow unhindered and without physical barriers
.
B) provide a moist soil at all times. This may mean applying a thick layer of organic mulch that acts as a moisture capturer and provides ongoing feeding for the flowering vine. Never allow the soil to dry out. Always feel the soil with your hand if in doubt and water accordingly
.
C) cucumbers are heavy feeders. Don’t deprive them of food or they will end up crooked/malformed. At planting time, fertilise them heavily with a strong all-round fertiliser and provide them with a rich source of potassium every few weeks thereafter. The potassium can be sourced from anywhere including potassium salts, seaweed concentrate or even the traditional potash approach of excreting potassium from ash residue. It does not matter where the potassium is sourced from
.
Sometimes however points A), B) and C) above still don’t produce straight cucumbers because of factors beyond your control and the biggest reason for this are pollination issues
.
Even if you hand-pollinate or have an abundance of garden pollinators, cucumbers may still form crooked and this is because cucumber pollen works best in a warm partly-humid environment. If your summer experiences erratic dry spells or excessive rainfall, the ovaries of the female flower may still not be fully pollinated

Our vertical herb bed has been temporarily retired for some maintenance but our sneaky little cat may have worked out a new sheltered spot for summer 😂
