Wood ash had been used by humans for a very long time as a liming agent to improve and neutralise acidic soils because it contains good amounts of CALCIUM

The CALCIUM present depends on the combustion process involved in the burning of the wood and the type and age of the wood. The ash residue however will likely contain either calcium oxide (CALCIUM in its raw form aka quicklime), or will be made up of calcium carbonate - the main form of calcium present in eggshells for example

The other main ingredient of wood ash is POTASSIUM. Before synthetic and manufactured potassium salts were produced, traditional sources of POTASSIUM were sourced from soaking and dissolving the ashes in water to create a water soluble form of potassium
