.
We find in our garden that they ripen at 3 different stages
.
- Xmas/New Year
.
- early February
.
- late season (the majority) There’s a whole swag of green tomatoes which will probably ripen late February/early March (and perhaps later)
.
Ideally, we are always looking for plants that can sustain an extended ripening season and this variety fits the requirement nicely

Heirloom MORTGAGE LIFTER TOMATOES
.
Do your prefer heirloom or hybrid tomatoes?
.
Next year we are going to plant more hybrid varieties. Compared to heirloom varieties, they are generally not as tasty but they provide benefits that heirloom varieties sometimes disappoint
.
Although Hybrid varieties are genetically volatile in their first few generations, they can stabilise in the long-term and produce a strong seed
.
We have grown hybrids in the past and a lot of home gardeners have also interbred tomatoes to produce a seed that can be used as a favourite family grown heirloom variety
.
First generation hybrids (F1) have fewer problems than their heirloom counterparts. They generally produce more tomatoes and are stronger in terms of resistance to pest and disease problems
.
One of the problems with heirloom tomatoes is that once a upon a time, they were originally grown in a particular region and for a particular climatic region but as they have now circulated around the globe, they haven’t always necessarily grown well in all summer regions of the world and they often need care and attention for issues like cracking etc
.
Hybrids on the other hand tend to be much more adaptable and low-maintenance and can grow quite well in bad or difficult growing conditions. They can also store better than most heirloom varieties
.
Whether you are a professional greenhouse breeder or a home gardener, breeding tomatoes is great fun, so if you come up with a stable seed over time, make sure to patent it as the inventor! That is what commercial seed growers do 😂
