Gardening MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY . This is a

MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY
.
This is a common sight on the leaves of citrus trees. MAGNESIUM is a key element that allows nitrogen to be used effectively to create a rich green-looking leaf
.
MAGNESIUM deficiency can occur on any soil but is more prone on acidic soil although it can also present itself on alkaline soils as a result of:
.
A) high amounts of dolomite lime which although contains magnesium takes a long time to break down and is not readily available upon application
.
B) soils with elevated levels of calcium and potassium compete with and can significantly prevent magnesium uptake by the roots
.
2 ways to ensure you do not have a severe MAGNESIUM problem is to:
.
1) use magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt). This is the quickest way to add MAGNESIUM for a fast-acting fix. Diluted in water and used as a foliage spray, it is taken up by the tree very effectively
.
2) fertilise citrus trees consistently with a good all-round fertiliser containing good levels of minerals
.
Citrus trees are very heavy feeders. It is important to fertilise them at LEAST twice a year preferably mid-Autumn and again a couple of weeks before the start of spring
.
Here in Australia, many gardeners are concerned about fertilising their citrus trees just before spring, because it promotes vigorous early spring flush growth attracting female gall wasps who immediately lay eggs on softwood growth. Adult gall wasps exit the galls in early spring to mate and lay eggs on softwood - for this reason you can alter your fertilising schedule to avoid coinciding with the wasps natural 12 month cycle on your trees

OLIVES 😍😍😍
.
Our OLIVE trees have started to produce olives in bigger numbers 2 years before the expected ‘big hauls’
.
This first batch have already been taken inside for preservation with salt and olive oil 😋

Our BRUSSELS SPROUT plant looking strong
.
We are growing a first generation F1 hybrid variety
.
First generation plants (F1) grown from inbred lines are reliable performers producing great consistent yields and size because of the process of heterosis as a result of the cross-breeding
.
F1 plants are very vigorous, adaptable to extreme and adverse weather conditions and generally possess higher resistance to pests and disease
.
Because of the reliability of F1 plants, people often save seed for the following season however as the generation line gets longer, these seeds may not necessarily produce quality crop like its F1 equivalent and often they start self-pollinating over generations creating a condition known as inbreeding depression which causes a plant to be less fertile, hardy and vigorous than its originating parent plants
