Gardening It’s RASPBERRY season @thegeogarden

It’s RASPBERRY season @thegeogarden 😍😍😍
.
RASPBERRIES (along with a number of berry varieties) grow better in cooler temperate climates
.
Some hybrid varieties can grow in the sub-tropics but taste is often compromised and they will not grow in the tropics because they need at least 700 to 800 chilling hours during dormancy
.
They are very adaptable to cold conditions and raspberries in particular can handle snow and frost conditions during dormancy. In fact, the colder it gets the sweeter the fruit taste in summer πŸ˜‹

After been ravaged by early possum attacks, we eventually netted some of our STRAWBERRY PLANTS and with patience comes our first ALPINE STRAWBERRY πŸ“
.
No sharing with possums on these small but incredibly sweet strawberries. They sure pack a punch for their size πŸ˜‹

RONDE DE NICE ZUCCHINI plants starting to explode
.
We planted this variety a little later than our other varieties and we have lots of flowers and a couple of pollinated fruit coming through strongly 😍😍😍

GARLIC - Not a bad early harvest considering we ‘squashed’ our garlic plants into an incredibly tiny growing space πŸ˜‚
.
This is why we love urban gardening. You can grow anything in any space
.
We have a collection of large and small bulbs and the reason for this is due to a combination of factors:
.
A) We planted these a month later than we should have. For big plump fully developed bulbs, cloves need to be planted at or around the autumn equinox. Get the timing wrong and GARLIC is ruthlessly unforgiving 😧
.
The leaves need to be given time to fully develop whilst the days are short. The leaf growth will stop at around spring equinox and as the days get longer the plant will use its stored food and energy reserves for the development of the bulbs
.
B) We planted them way too close together (to save space) and the root zones greatly interfered with each other. They do need to be adequately spaced out
.
C) They were shaded by bigger neighbours in the latter stages of leaf growth. Sunlight is crucial for garlic photosynthesis
.
D) We had a mild outbreak of garlic RUST on some of the leaves that needed to be removed. Garlic rust is a fungal disease that can affect crops belonging to the allium family (ie leeks, onions). Their spores are spread by wind or leaves touching each other in overcrowded growing environments
.
The fungus will affect the vigour of the plant ultimately reducing the size of the bulb. The outbreak is linked to heavy watering/rainfall/moisture and a lack of drying space and time
.
Overall, a great outcome for us rather than having to buy GARLIC that is sprayed or fumigated with methyl bromide - a gas used as:
.
- a pesticide
.
- the fumigation of soil
.
- the fumigation of imported goods into this country including garlic
.
