We have a lot of young capsicums developing like the ones in this photo but whether they will grow to maturity with the cold weather setting in, time will tell
.
We've noticed with our pepper/capsicum plants that because we've planted them so close together (literally, we struggle to get our hand in for a harvest) they seem to be well insulated and enjoying each other's company. We have also planted them on an a fence line providing them with some wind-break protection and cold winds
.
Even though they are by evolution a warm season vegetable they definitely don't mind growing in a part shade environment as we have done so, even though they've missed out on a lot of the strong morning-noon sun
.
So if you are growing them for the first time, don't be afraid to grow them in a part-shade setting. They seem to grow fuss-free with a bit of added protection from our harsh Southern Hemisphere sun ✅

KOHLRABI GROWING TIPS:

KOHLRABI is by evolution a cool season crop. We like to sow our KOHLRABI seeds very late in Autumn to minimise the presence of butterflies and the Cabbage White Caterpillar. We will end up with a harvest in early spring

KOHLRABI thrives in soil that is sweet and favours slightly alkaline soil (like most vegetables do) so if your soil is acidic, add some dolomite lime or wood ash
.
Like all members of the Brassicas family, they are very hungry plants and do like to grow quickly and unimpeded, so it is important to feed them often along with regular watering
.
If kohlrabi is not fed adequately or the soil is not conducive to its growing requirements you will end up with plants that seem to be taking an eternity to grow or plants that look like they aren't growing at all
.
Green manure is a very good form of fertiliser for KOHLRABI ✅

With overnight temperatures plunging below 10 degrees celsius and maximum temperatures well under 20 degrees celsius, these PEPPERS have a very good good reason to be rendered inoperable, but fortunately for us being close to the water we do not attract frost levels (but at times we get very close) that could kill these plants very easily however with winter temperatures so low we are not anticipating quick ripening of any of our crop however the growth and development of new peppers has definitely not slowed down and this has astounded us. These temperatures are not conducive to new growth of buds

GARLIC PLANTING TIP:

These are bulbs a friend gave to us months ago after he had a not so successful garlic season. As you can see his bulbs did not form to maturity and were given to us to try our hand at replanting. They sprouted naturally and unassisted only a few days ago
.
With hundreds of garlic varieties available, each variety of garlic has its own growing requirements. Some are grown from late summer right through to winter and some varieties take longer to grow than others. There are no hard or fast rules with garlic!
.
If someone offers you a bulb for planting at home (like our friend did) but you are not sure of its variety or the source of its origins, would you know WHEN to plant it? and would you know if the garlic variety you received was suitable for planting in your climate and current season?
.
ANSWER: You can take the garlic and plant it but there's no guarantee that when you pull it out will it meet any of your expectations especially if it was planted at the wrong time
.
A more positive approach would be to take the bulb (as long as it didn't come from a refrigerator and was not treated to prolong its shelf life) and store it in a dry, dark and cool place and wait until it sprouts
.
A sprouted bulb is natures call for when the bulb is ready to be replanted ✅

Is your CAULIFLOWER head showing a tint of purple colour?

If so, don't panic.

This tinting of your CAULIFLOWER head is caused by a naturally occurring pigment called anthocyanin which is found in a lot of your favourite veggies like grapes and eggplants. Prolonged sun exposure causes this discolouration
.
Although you may find the flavour of a purple tinted CAULIFLOWER strong and perhaps a tad bitter, it is quite harmless and edible
.
If you prefer to keep your CAULIFLOWER white as snow as sold in supermarkets, try blanching it - the process of covering the growing head with leaves so the sun does not burn the sensitive immature flowers (curd). We'll be doing this soon
.
Some CAULIFLOWER varieties do the blanching for you but for those varieties (like ours) it's best to wait until the leaves grow big enough and then tie them over the developing head ✅

Our plants have been growing without any assistance for months. At the seedling stage we applied some general all-round fertiliser around the base of the plants and only applied some seaweed solution while they were small but all of this was done well before Xmas
.
They are resilient plants and if you give them the right nutrients for "growing bones" while they are young, we really haven't needed to do anything else to them in over 6 months other than protect their volatile branches from wind damage ✅

BROADBEANS are often grown not only for their pods but for their excellent green manure qualities
.
If you grow them purely for this purpose to improve poor and infertile soils or to simply provide natural fertiliser to your existing garden beds, they are best chopped down as soon as you see flowers developing on them and prior to pod production for maximum nitrogen extraction
.
BROADBEANS work with a particular species of bacteria who colonise and live on the roots of the plant. (Once you pull the plants out, you can actually see the galls where the bacteria lived. They look like nematode galls)
.
The bacteria work by harvesting nitrogen from the air and converting it into ammonia that the plant is able to consume for growth
.
Therefore there is no need to fertilise your BROADBEANS with nitrogen fertiliser unless your soil is not healthy and lacking compost. In cases like this, inoculating your plants with bacteria is an option and will allow the bacteria to actively live in your soil
.
The bacteria do not harm the roots and are kept alive by the photosynthesised sugars in the plant

Haha. Love it when nature pushes you along. We've been a bit slack with harvesting our ripening LIMES so nature has decided to help us out

TAHITIAN LIMES are ripe when they turn greenish-yellow (more yellow) and they happily fall off the tree. These may not taste the best but then again the beauty with LIMES is you can harvest them whenever you like and use them for whatever applications you desire whether it be for acidic tasting, sweet tasting, or slightly bitter tasting experiences
.
It is however best in our opinion to leave them on the tree when green and pick them whenever you need them as they keep longer on the tree than harvested unless of course you harvest them prematurely for freezing ✅

If you have stonefruit trees, chances are that bad little fungi are calling these branches home - a fungi responsible for a disease known as LEAF CURL that predominantly affects nectarine and peach trees but can target volatile, weak or unhealthy apricot and quince trees
.
The fungi overwinter as spores hiding within the cavities of the tree around cracks, bark and areas protected from exposure. They remain there until the new buds form in early spring at which point they commence reproducing and start to infect developing leaves especially in the presence of rain and moisture
.
The best way to kill off this organism is to apply LIME SULPHUR or COPPER fungicide although the later is more stressful on the environment adding toxicity to the soil and killing earthworms
.
Copper in soil is a very important nutrient to plants used for chlorophyll formation however excessive amounts from fungicide sprays can affect the delicate ecosystem of the soil because copper will compete with key nutrients iron and zinc. High amounts of copper in the soil will also affect the root growth of a plant because root tips will get burnt by copper

We have had one small branch on one of our plants that succumbed to the cold and needed to be cut off

PRUNING TIP:
.
Formation of woody stems on peppers and eggplants are alarm bells. The leaves and foliage will start wilting and any peppers on that branch will start going soft, mushy and will not grow any further. The branch should be cut off immediately so the wilt does not spread further and the vegetables on there should not be eaten
.
Corrective pruning will give the tree a better chance of survival over the colder months ✅

GROWING TIP IN WINTER:
.
Winter time in temperate climates can be a stressful time for warm weather perennials like chilli plants. Every few weeks it is best advised to apply a seaweed based solution to keep the plants strong during unfavourable growing conditions
.
Seaweed extract is very good for this purpose. Not only does it contain excellent vitamins and growth stimulators, but contains high and excellent sources of POTASSIUM critical for a plant that depends on flowering so heavily and the role potassium players in regulating/transporting nutrients and water for the plant. Seaweed extract can be applied to the soil and foliage making it so easy to apply
.
There is no need to be additionally fertilising a chilli plant. We fertilise ONCE at the seedling stage at the beginning of spring. The soil however is important. Chill plants LOVE alkaline sweet soils but don't go over board or it could work to its detriment ✅

We've been so slack with our CAULIFLOWER bed

It's been too cold and wet to go out into the yard and control pests like snails, slugs and caterpillars

The only thing we've really been conscious off is keeping a close eye on aphids/white flies around the head

We've also given them an occasional drink of plant tonic because they like to grow fast and be kept strong and well nourished. The rest we've just left to nature
